Understanding Chiropractic Care

The goal of chiropractic care is to enable your body to heal itself, without the use of drugs or surgery, by correcting structural problems in the spine (also known as subluxations) and restoring movement.  When the spine is not functioning properly, the spinal nerves are put under stress. This interferes with the body’s ability to carry vital information between the brain and other body parts via the central nervous system.

This is important, because the central nervous system controls the function of all of the systems of the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative, and immune.  When messages along the central nervous system run into interference, it can greatly affect how your body functions, and in turn, your health.

The result of the nerve stress can be pain, muscle spasms, numbness, and tingling. But irritated nerves can also cause your organs and tissues to be over or under stimulated. This can contribute to problems that many people wouldn’t associate with proper spinal function including: difficulty breathing, excess stomach acid, constipation, lower immunity, and more.
 

What Causes Nerve Stress?

Spinal nerve stress can be caused by physical, chemical, and emotional factors.  The very first physical stresses to the body can begin while in the womb and during the birthing process – resulting in many newborn health complaints.  Spinal nerve stress in children and adults can be the result of many things we encounter in our daily lives, including injuries, trauma, and repetitive movement.
 
Spinal nerve stress can also be the result of poor posture and physical inactivity. In fact, we are seeing a rise in neck pain, headaches, and other posture related issues due to extended use of electronic handheld devices such as smart phones and tablets.

When spinal nerve stress is relieved, the body can function more efficiently, is more resistant to disease, and immune system function improves.  This improved function enables the body to better handle the stressors of everyday life and maintain overall better health.
